Okay gang,
Once upon a time, Niero made a translucent veil. I
half-humourously suggested a genie outfit to go with it, and by gum,
he made it!
So, I said I would make a Genie Companion mod, and Ventyr,
Grizzly_UK, and Niero urged me on, and it is now almost finished,
with the following features:
1) One beautiful head and hair
courtesy of the amazing CanadianIce (she very generously custom-made
them for this mod based on meshes from Rhedd and Gorg).
2)
One Genuine Genie Bottle (with particle effect animated smoke) and a
surprise interior mesh (both from Blue Eagle). He abandoned his
Bottle Home mod, and had turned the resources for it over to
Garret_Strife, who kindly consented to let me use them.
3)
Scripting and dialogue by me, with help from GhanBuriGhan's
excellent Morrowind Scripting For Dummies v 5.0 (required reference
material for any scripter)
3a) She can be summoned and
returned to her bottle at will, as often as you like. Anywhere, any
time. As long as you have the bottle.
3b) She is immortal. If "killed", she will merely retreat to
her bottle, to be summoned later.
3c) She is a non-standard
companion type. She will not fight your battles for you, or lug your
crap around.
3d) What she will do is magic. She can
do minor stuff like provide light, and cure Common Diseases as often
as desired.
3e) She can grant 3 Wishes per day. These are
more major functions, but not (I hope) unbalancing. Wishes currently
include Cure Blight Disease, Healing the Player's wounds, Restoring
the Player's Magicka, Create Ammunition (20 silver missiles -
player's choice of arrows, bolts or darts - approximate retail value
60 Septims), Create Repair Tools (roughly 60 Septims worth of
Hammers and prongs), Create Lockpicks (approx. 60 Septims' worth),
Create Probes (ditto). (I am trying to keep all the "Create X"
wishes balanced, and since a useful resupply of ammo capable of
overcoming weapon resistance is 20 silver shots, I used the same
retail value for the other packages, hoping to minimize the "money
pump" aspect of this.) Remember, you only get three Wishes per day,
So even if you spent them all on equipment and turned right around
and sold everything AT FULL VALUE you'd only net about 180 Septims a
day or 5,400 Septims a month, which is less profit for a month of
wasted wishes than you'd get by selling one high value item to the
Mud Crab (even without the buy-sell-buy-sell trick). Hopefully, this
is a balanced solution. If you think it is still too "Monty Haul"
let me know, and I'll cut it back some more.
All right, now
for my questions. First, sound is killing me. Sound effects (WAV's)
are no problem, and there are some nifty SFX. Voice is another
matter. I have saved a voice file in MP3 format, 64KBits/s, 44.1
KHz, 16 bit Mono (just like all the other voice files in the game).
I have created an appropriate Voice entry in TESCS and pointed it to
the correct MP3. And nothing happens. I have spent ages going in
circles on this (I have never dealt with MP3's for Morrowind
before). Hopefully one of the Sound Wizards will see this and steer
me in the right direction.
Second, what other Wishes (and
minor magics) would you like her to be able to perform? Helpful
SUPPORT functions are what I'm looking for; nothing uber. I want her
to be a useful Companion of an entirely new type, not a pack animal
or cannon fodder, but a helping hand when you're stuck. I have
actualy got a few more ideas of my own, but would like to find out
what YOU would like in a genie.
The more choices, the tougher it will be for the player to decide
how to spend his wishes.
Finally, I am setting up a way for
her to take the Player inside the Bottle (for access to storage). At
the moment I am using Mark and Recall (one Wish to get in, free to
get out), but I am looking at the ship mods for a way around this. I
doubt this wish will be functional in interiors if I go that route,
so my last question is: use Mark and Recall and let you do it
anywhere, or limit it this functionality to exterior cells, and free
up Mark and Recall?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
[EDIT: Screenies will follow this evening]

This is great
stuff Vorwoda! I am sooooooooo looking forward to adding this one to
my collection! Have you decided on a name for the Genie yet?
(Please, please say you've chosen Jeanie!
)
Reading through the features I'm very impressed with what
you've done so far. It seems to be very well, and fairly, balanced,
especially the wishes. As for your questions, here's my little bit
of input.
Sorry to say I can't offer any help on the sound
files problem. I'm still getting the hang of using the basics of the
CS!
Hopefully someone else will give you the solution!
Other
wishes? More choices, tougher to choose? I'd say that sounds good. I
don't think adding more "Create Item" wishes would be good, how
about adding Restore Atttributes, maybe some Fortify spells? Sorry,
not too good at this either, trying to think of wishes that could be
useful and would help make choosing wishes a little harder, based
off the fact that she won't fight, but could help you to either
prepare for a battle or recover after a battle, simply to make the
player think about which wish they want to use and when they want to
use a wish. Sort of a forward thinking approach to using the
wishes.
Using Mark and Recall for entering the bottle could
cause problems. If the player has a Mark set somewhere for a reason,
then the player wouldn't want to enter the bottle because they'd
loose their previous Mark (unless the player uses the
MultipleTeleport mod). I'd say limit the functionality. Thinking
along the lines of most players will already be making use of a home
for storage/display I'd also suggest maybe limiting how much could
be stored inside the Bottle.
Well, there's my thoughts, I
hope some of it helps a little!

I'm at a loss
with sound myself so I can't help there...
Hrmmm how about
for a wish make her summon a ton load of critters to do the real
fighting? Or maybe one summon per wish?
And I would choose to
NOT give up mark/recall, as these spells are to useful elsewhere.
Besides players shouldn't have the option to escape into the safty
of a bottle in the middle of a dungeon siege.
sounds great so
far! And the three wishes thing rocks!!!

I'd certainly use it! I'd be intrested in a companion that is more

I second
Ashemanu's idea about armour and weapons repair. Nothing worst than
being stuck in the dungeon with not a hammer in sight....And those
Boots of Blinding Speed are always first to go.
Another idea might be a mid level soul gem or two(full or
empty) as a recharge for your magical stuff.
As for the
problem with sound, I can't help you myself but maybe you should try
to contact RedSand, the author of "Morrowind NPC Voices vol.1"???
He/she might be abble to offer you some advice.....

I think access
to the bottle should be for a peacefull nights sleep free from
midnight wakeup calls from the dark brotherhood rather than
storage.Perhaps a nice shield spell or an emergency heal during a
fight would be useful assistance. All in all though this sounds like
a very well thought out mod.Do you plan on her being a quest reward
or just something to go and pick up,that would be a bit of a let
down.

Love the
genie in the bottle idea. Im sure youll work it out ! Sorry, Im just
beggining to start messing with the constructiuon set, sound is way
out of my league.
I think theres two ways you can go with
this. One, unlimited wishes but small ones like cure blight, or a
teleport or fix a weapon. Two, go for BIG wishes. 3 per day, or per
month like add +10 to a stat permanatly. Enchant an item beyond what
would normally be able to. Like I put Meatl Queens mens glasses at 4
lbs, makes them medium armor. Also they have night vision at 20, all
3 detects at 100 feet. and telekinisis at 50 ft, permantly (yeah, i
know its a big cheat! but I play the game at 100 diff with alot of
nasty addons!)
Maybe the genie can due her big stuff only
with a big soul, plus the moons have to be right.
Even tho, a
fighting genie wouldnt be bad, especially one you can carry in a
bottle. No carry, just fight with good equipment.
Up to you,
Im sure youll dazzle wich ever way you go!

This does
sound like a good idea. Having a companion around that wouldn't do
the fighting for the player would be an interesting change. Alas,

A great idea
for a mod, which I'm certainly looking forward to trying.
The
sentiments about not "using up" mark and recall I go along
with.
Whilst the armor-repair comment is certainly valid, I
take it this is addressed through the ability to provide the
necessary hammers.
Some form of enchantment capability is a
must.
I'm similarly struggling with sound, so am not in a
position to be able to offer any advice there.
One final
comment, regarding the magic wishes (and in the final analysis you
must keep this as a "surprise"). Why not have G able to grant
something completely "unexpected" (although not ueber, so as to be
in keeping with the general philosophy of the mod)? Suggestions
would include a "magic wand" (not staff) with which something could
be done (only once), a magic pair of gloves (which would wear out
after 24 hours) and so on.
Good
luck!

Have
no idea how to use this (above), but it might be what you're looking
for.
Qwert had a magic wagon in a mod called "Plane of Dread"
that the player could carry around with him/her. Used kind of a
recall marker (misc. item) that the player had to set before he
entered the wagon. Recall to that spot. AFAIK it didn't involve
mark/recall spells. Might be what you're looking for.
@ Euro
search for Qwert.
Mod sounds great!
Best of luck with
it, and I'm sure it'll take companions to a whole new level.

Cool concept.
I would recommend not tying up mark/recall, they are too useful
(even if the alternative turns out to be clunky, I would prefer it
over giving up my recall)
As far as ideas for minor wishes,
how about Divine Intervention and its Dunmer counterpart (who's name
I have temporarily blanked on), and mid-range summoning or binding
spells, or how about an Open spell (if targeting is a problem, she
sould just hand you an open scroll).

I would like to point out that
the animated genie bottle and the bottle-home interior mesh are both
made by myself. I originally modeled them from scratch in Max for
Blue Eagle, who abandoned his bottle-home project (as you
mentioned)
You're more then welcome to use them, of course. I
don't like to demand a place in a mod's credits. But, if there -is-
a spot crediting -someone- with those meshes we should get it right.
Anyways, cool mod. I'll certainty give it a try. How
about making the weather clear up for one of the

properly credited in the Readme, and I apologize again for my error.
And thanks for giving permission (I would have asked you had I
realized)! By the way, the bottle interior in particular absolutely
blew me away!
Okay, before moving on to the discussion
portion, here are the screenies I know you want...

All right, now
that the slide show is over, let's all resume our seats for a chat.
With 6 votes against Mark and Recall and 0 votes in favour,
I will not use Mark and Recall. Many thanks to Grumpy for suggesting
Qwert's "Plane of Dread" wagon. I will have a look at it, pronto!
Grizzly, After full text searching all ten
volumes of Sir Richard Burton's translation of "The Book of a
Thousand Nights and a Night", and the half dozen or so volumes of
"Supplemental Nights" (at Project Gutenberg - thanks to Tatriya for
reminding me of them), I found precisely 5 named Jinniyahs (female
Jinnis) in the entire set.
1. Maymunah, 2.
Princess Shamsah 3. Badi'a al-Jamal 4.
Setelpedour. Can it be a corruption of Sitt El Budoor?
5. Cheheristani
After all of that research, I
decided to go with Jeannie (especially after the gracious, talented,
and fast-working CanadianIce did the Barbara Eden face for me). Her
evil sister, on the other hand, is liable to draw one of the more
authentic names above (since I won't just call her "Jeannie 2").
And I think I've finished adding "Create Item" Wishes. I may
tweak them a bit, though.
Grizzly, Gali
Nuva, Ashemanu Restores and Fortifies and Cure Poison
are definitely on the list!
Niero Thank you
for your amazing, inspiring work!
I never would have started this if I hadn't seen what you did.
About the Summoning Creatures: I'll try it, but I don't
think it will work properly. As I understand the issue: summoned
creatures won't join combat unless the summoner is attacked.
Enemies could kick your butt all day, and the summoned hordes
would stand and watch. Only if the Genie was attacked, would they
fight. That renders her summonings relatively futile. I'll test it
anyway, just don't hold your breath, as this probably won't work.
Nice idea, though.
wanderlusttoo, Travel can be
done. For a group, it would require Fast Travel, and I would
have to find a way to prevent paying (who pays their genie?), and
find a way to make it cost a Wish (which probably isn't doable,
since Fast Travel functions are hard-coded on the game). A simple
teleport for the genie and the Player would work, although all other
companions would be left behind.
Gali Nuva I
know it is THE classic Wish, but I was trying to avoid money as much
as possible, since money is so easy to get already. You can always
sell the silver arrows she can conjure up, if you're strapped for
cash.
Ashemanu, About repair: she can conjure
Hammers and Tongs for you to do your own repairs. If she were to
repair stuff directly, I would be in the realm of hard-coded
functions again, and would have to prevent paying (a la Fast Travel,
above).
zahratustra, See above about repair.
I thought about empty Petty Soul Gems, but even that is a
real invitation to a money pump. I understand your logic (and it's
good). I'm just trying hard not to let this go "over the top". We'll
see.
And about your suggestion of PM-ing RedSand, THANK YOU!
I will do that ASAP!
Barabus, Shield is good,
as is Healing.
And there will definitely be a quest.
As for a refuge from the DB, that hadn't occurred to me.
I'll have to find some way of stopping them, since DB assassins
chasing you into a bottle is too silly for words! I may have to
prevent you from starting the quest until the DB have been dealt
with. Ugh!
Kazuki, and ModPhiend, I'm
struggling to keep this balanced, please don't tempt me!
Having something special under a double full moon or other EXTREMELY
rare event might be a possibility...
Dreamweaver,
and baratheon, Thank you for the encouragement!
oldie Quite right about the repair. Problem
with Enchanting same as Fast Travel and Repair Services above.
Secret, one-off surprise: that's a second vote for an easter
egg. I'll work on it.
Grumpy, Sorry about the
healer lady!
I think I told you once that I originally wanted to make Hippolyta a
healer type, but found it reached the indestructibility point too
easily. By logically limiting it to a max of 3 per day, I think this
can work.
And thanks again for your practical advice on how
not to hose Mark and Recall. You, sir, are a gentleman and a
scholar!
TKATK Oh, I LOVED it when my
AD&D players used to try THAT old one. MUAHAHAHAHA! Suffice it
to say, you would NOT be amused! (Hint: infinite loops are very easy
to script!)
Mhoraethian, Divine and Almsivi:
maybe. Emma just mentioned that someone told her of a bug about
those spells involving companions (but not HER companions). So I
think I'll avoid that for now, at least until that's clarified.
An Open might work. Nice thought!
dongle,
Again, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! :
And Weather Control is a FINE idea!

Vorvoda, if
somebody wants to abuse companion they will always find a way to do
it, sometimes even tweeking him/her to be just that bit more
helpfull....
I have thought about it myself and AFAIR only
Ali Baba's gene was uncommonly gentle, most of the others are a
fickled and mischevious lot who serve because they have to and not
because they want to.... Now is there a way to introduce some sort
of mechanism which would turn Jeannie nasty if excesive demands were
placed on her (for example if somebody demanded more than certain
amount of items in a set amount of time???). On the other hand if PC
treats her right she will be nice in return....
This might go
some way not only to prevent "gene abuse" but also give her more
character and make her more interesting.
btw can she dance???
"Dance of the Seven Veils" immediatelly springs to mind

You must,
must, must read The Amulet of Samarkand: The Bartimaeus Trilogy by
Jonathan Stroud. Only the first book is out right now but it give a
WHOLE different perspective on genies/djins. If you could create a
djin like that it would be awesome and very amusing. Since you find
out relatively early in the books, this won't be a
spoiler.
In Stroud's world, all the magicians get their power
from demons. (I listened to the book tapes so it could be daemons.)
They must summon one of about 8 different leveled creatures. Each
level up could do more things. Djins or genies were about the 7th
level. You could bind them to do many tasks or just one. In the
books, you needed to draw pentagrams, burn ingredients, and say
"spells" to do it. Now, the demons hate, hate, hate humans, for the
most part. They will do anything to find a mistake or loophole or
the real name of the magician so they can thwart them or really mess
up their lives. So, it is very dangerous to summon one. The demons
can spend no time on the physical plane unless summoned.
Not
saying that you should create this very genie. Just thinking that
Stroud's perspective of a genie seems more right to me than "I dream
of Genie." Here is a creature who has lived thousands of years, is
forcefully summoned and required to do the bidding of his/her
summoner - no matter how stupid or trivial. I could see a bored,
sarcastic, arrogant, hostile creature that could be portrayed as
funny with the right dialog.

Right Paschors, that's what I

Sounds like a
truly innovative and inspiring mod, Vorwoda! I'm
looking forward to it! (I don't suppose you could make me a
Disney-Aladdin-cartoon-movie-genuinely-blue-and-constantly-talking
genie instead of a pretty lady?
Oh, well, I guess not - I will have to live with the fact that the
rest of you would want her to be a beautiful female )
As
for the intervention problem we were discussing, I don't think it
would affect this mod. The problem I mentioned was related to the
72-hours-bug and occurred when the companion was left for more than
72 hours in another place than where she was originally found. The
problem also involwed a re-worked version of "my" Laura's telepathy
ring in combination with an extensive intervention script.
As
your genie will probably be either together with the player or in a
special cell (when not summoned) I don't think you should have any
problem with this. On the other hand, you should probably not use a
script similar to the telepathy script for summoning her, as that
might cause important problems connected to the 72 hours bug. I.e.
don't "contact" her before summoning, just summon her with a simple
teleport item, and talk to her once she has arrived.
(If you
want to talk more about this, you can either summon me via e-mail or
via Bethesda's magical PM-section )

Just a
thought, but Jeannie's master was an air force dude right?
So
it makes since that Jeannie provided a little magic to a non-magic
guy.
Hence, Jeannie should be able to (in MW) cast "utility"
spells for her master, such as Water Breathing, Levitation, etc.,
etc.
Make the quest to find the bottle HARD , not some
NPC telling you to find it at Arille's.
The
way I see it is, Jeannie provides non-magic PCs with some of the
basics that allow them easier access in MW without the need to cart
around tons of scrolls and potions. Obviously you don't want to
allow Jeannie to cast 24 hour, 100% Reflects at will on her master,
but if your character gets stuck, or needs to go somewhere fast,
etc.
Besides utility spells, if you could enable her to
Teleport herself and her mater to various places of obvious
importance, such as a Temple for healing/curing, perhaps a Mages
Guild, a Silt Strider, etc. For those who have low or no Mysticism
skill. The rule of thumb here is to ask yourself what magical effect
does a Warrior ABSOLUTELY need to navigate the world, then add
those.

Jeannie
**sigh** seen the TV-series of course, my daughter loved them. And
now you're bringing this adorable clumsy girl to our game, great!
This a wonderful idea, giving the player the chance to be in control
of Jeannie. On second thoughts, she never wanted to be send back to
her bottle, and she never easily listened to commands. In fact noone
was ever really in control of Jeannie.
Haha, she'll probably
makes a mess of your wishes too. "Jeannie, give me 20 bolts"! "Yes
master, here are some prongs".

Thanks all,
for your interest in this!
Shanjaq, Actually,
I had a couple of ideas for this. The genie summoning a creature to
defend Master is looking more like a possibility in the cold light
of dawn than it did when I posted last
night.
dongle, Thanks for
understanding!
zahratustra, Actually, Aladdin (not
Ali Baba) had two genies over the course of the story: the Slave of
the Ring was more mild and less powerful, the Slave of the Lamp was
really powerful and treacherous. Throughout the Nights there are
numerous Jinnis and Jinniyahs, and many of them are good and
willing. Many others are evil and tricky. But there are plenty of
examples of BOTH types, if you go through all 1,001
Nights!
So I'm going to leave Jeannie benevolent. However,
there is her sister, who does NOT play nice! Equally immortal, so
you can't kill her, but you might be able to trick her or trap her.
zahratustra
and oldie, As for dancing, I can add that. Not the Dance
of the 7 Veils, though, unless you get an Animator to make some new
animations!
Grizzly, I
love Jeannie, too. Ventyr mentioned that he knows Barbara Eden's
niece (the lucky blighter). If only he could cajole some new voice
samples out of her (in the right format)...
Daduke, Mmm-hmm.
paschors, The
Amulet of Samarkand: The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud.
Sounds great, and I will make it a point to get it! It will probably
be too late to affect this mod, though. The system you describe
seems reasonably similar to one prevalent in some older fantasy
literature (the Faust legend springs immediately to mind).
Unfortunately, it would take a whole different approach to work it
into Morrowind (if it's even possible, under this game engine).
Morrowind's magic system is pretty hard-coded, and though we can
work around a lot of it through scripting, I'm not sure how close we
could come to a power-drawn-from-summoned-spirits model.
Quote:
Not saying that you should create this very genie. Just
thinking that Stroud's perspective of a genie seems more right to
me than "I dream of Genie." Here is a creature who has lived
thousands of years, is forcefully summoned and required to do the
bidding of his/her summoner - no matter how stupid or trivial. I
could see a bored, sarcastic, arrogant, hostile creature that
could be portrayed as funny with the right dialog.
And I agree wholeheartedly that
this interpretation is a good one. I love L. Sprague deCamp,
Fletcher Pratt and Robert Lynn Asprin, all of whom handle that sort
of character magnificently (if you haven't read their works, try
deCamp and Pratt's "Compleat Enchanter" and "Reluctant King" series
and R.L.A.'s "Myth" books. They rank right up there with Terry
Pratchett's "Discworld" books.
Anyway, my genie is just damn
glad to get out of her bottle after a loooong imprisonment, and
grateful to the one who frees her. One of the stories in the Nights
has an evil Jinni say that for the first two thousand years of his
imprisonment, he would have gratefully rewarded anyone who freed
him. Unfortunately, after another thousand years in the bottle, he
decided he'd simply kill the one who finally let him out. There you
have an example of a Jinni who could have been VERY good or VERY
evil, depending on when you encountered him.
But I will
definitely check out Stroud.
TextureFreak, Glad you
like it.

Yes, this makes a lot of
sense. Trapped for who knows how long in a bottle, bored and lonely,
any genie who was still sane would be very happy to get out even if
it was to do trivial tasks like blast someone into dust or levitate
you to the top of a cliff. Even one who was slightly insane would be
grateful. Sounds fantastic. I eagerly await this mod.....and as
another said, a male genie would be wonderful for us women.

I agree with
Emma on the comedy blue-Disney-genie option. I'd rather have
hilarity and fun than eye candy. Then again I'm crazy...
That aside, I have an idea as to how to implement a Travel
feature that can bring companions along with you. Place a variable
(global or in Jeannie's script) that determines whether or not
you've wished for transportation. If it's disabled, make Jeannie use
a bit of Service Refusal dialogue if you try to Travel. If it's
enabled, make her one Travel option take you to an interior cell
(for effect, I'd go for one with an open sky and the "I'm floating
on a small island in the middle of a weird void" effect) with
multiple NPCs standing around, each with four Travel options. Make
plenty of them so you can visit places from Mournhold to Solstheim
to many places in Vvardenfell and so forth.
The only problem
I can foresee is how to compensate for the player paying for
transportation. Perhaps you can do what the ancient (and I mean
ancient) Patsy companion mod did and temporarily set the player's
Mercantile skill to 10,000 or so.
/me wants
to bring companions to Mournhold.
"Genie, I want to see far-off places."
"I don't do freebies."
"Okay, I wish to travel to far-off places."
"That'll do."
*poof*
is now on large floating island shaped like Vvardenfell with NPCs
standing at different locations (who can transport him to sites near
where they're standing).
walks up to NPC standing a short walk "off" the island to the
south.
"Take me to Mournhold, genie."
"Sure thing!"
is in Mournhold, companions and all.

Lovely mod,
sound fun. About mark and recall don't use them they are to
useful elsewhere. The problem is not to enter the house inside
the bottle, which is just to place the player there. The problem is
to remember there you left, I think it is a mod called with multi
mark teleport who solved this, was able to remember the mark
position, here the problem is a little simpler, you has to remember
the position you left then you used the bottle and place you
back.
Post Extras: |

I managed to
create a small mod for myself (took about 90 minutes to make because
I work slowly, particularly with the map editor) that works nicely
and handles the transportation with companions issue.
I made
an item (Misc Item) that, when equipped, summons an Argonian
(Picks-Her-Nose; I was bored) in front of the player.
She's
scripted to speak to you as soon as you leave MenuMode. After
speaking, when you exit MenuMode (i.e. say Goodbye), she's disabled
and deleted. Her only function is Travel. She takes you to my Hall
of Doors (was going to be a hall but turned out to be a floating
island with a lot of trap doors, ringed by invisible walls so idiot
companions can't fall off -- it uses the "act like exterior" option
and is actually an interior cell).
The Hall of Doors has
doors that lead to every town on Vvardenfell as well as one of the
Dunmer strongholds and the exterior outside all three Great House
strongholds. I would've done a few major daedric shrines and dwemer
ruins but figured I'd rather have the fun of the adventure.
So, she takes you there with all your companions (which only
costs some chump change for the Travel service) and since it uses
actual doors to transport you, your companions also follow you to
your destination.
The only problem I have is, since I
tweaked my Morrowind INI so it shows Travel routes I've used, I end
up with yellow silt-strider Travel lines leading to cell 0 0 from
every exterior cell I call and use the travel agent's services. That
feature isn't enabled by default so it's my own fault in a way. If
that's the only problem I've come across, that isn't bad considering
I'm not a particularly experienced modder (I mostly do small bug
fixes and compatibility tweaks as well as the occasional scripting
-- all for my own benefit; I don't release mods).
So,
Travelling with companions is entirely possible and reasonable for
Jeannie. All you'd need to do more than I've done is throw in a
Service Refusal dialogue entry for her that's called if you don't
use a wish to travel first.

Jeremy, Glad you like it! I certainly hope to
have it ready in time for your new character. The Wishes and Magic
are cake at this point. The entering-and-leaving-the-bottle is
starting to shape up (with thanks due to those who have posted
suggestions and ideas on this thread). The Voice thing still bugs
the #$%^ out of me, though. Now that adding a difficult quest to get
the bottle has been suggested, I have a new dimension to add. And
since I want to make the bottle available to low-level types as well
as high-level ones, the quest relies more on brains (and
persistence) than on brawn. So that aspect is taking more time then
I originally expected. (As you can see, it wasn't finished in a
week!) Most of what I've got left to do is mere gruntwork, though
(except for the Voice thing. 500 Septims to anyone who can tell me
what the secret there is!)
As for the evil sister, she has
the same face as the good one, just a different hairstyle and
outfit. The biggest difference can't be seen in pictures, you'll
just have to wait to meet her!
Kaleban, Thank
you! Those suggestions were exactly the sort of things I hoped
people wanted, and great ideas for the sort of magical support to
add. You summed it up well when you said,
Quote:
The way I see it is, Jeannie provides non-magic PCs with some
of the basics that allow them easier access in MW without the need
to cart around tons of scrolls and potions. Obviously you don't
want to allow Jeannie to cast 24 hour, 100% Reflects at will on

Almost like you read my
mind!
Quote:
Make the quest to find the bottle HARD , not some NPC telling
you to find it at Arille's.
I never intended to make it THAT
easy, but since reading your post, the quest is getting much
trickier! And the release date is getting worse. Not panic-inducing
worse, but it is perceptably pushing things back. I hope it's worth
it.
Tommy, IIRC, she was accurate in granting what
was wished for, but tended to err through eagerness to please. So if
you wish for twenty bolts, you'll get them. Since reading your post,
though, I've thought of a way for her to sometimes "burn up" one of
your wishes on her own, while trying to help you. So you might find
you're "a Wish short" every once in a while, and that one was
granted without your asking. Which may throw a monkey wrench into
your plans, just as it often did for Major
Nelson!
Grumpy, That's a brilliant and REALLY evil
idea! I don't DARE use it now (I'm too far along in another
direction) but I certainly wish I'd thought of it first! Maybe in a
"sequel"...
paschors, A male genie for the ladies
would be nice. Perhaps a hulking male with turban and
scimitar. Or the blue guy!
But alas, meshes and textures...
Emma,
Quote:

You would probably be very
surprised! Even with a sand storm, if I really had a genie at my
command I doubt I'd really bother to return and finish typing
th---...
Wow, that was weird.
Guess I was wrong.
EarthquakeDamage, Service
Refusal dialogue! How could I have overlooked that? Thank you SOOO
much!
And I remember Patsy! That was another great
suggestion.
I doubt I'll go with Travel options to anything
like that extent. There are a couple of reasons for that decision.
First there are mods (like yours, for instance) that can do it
better than I. Second, the mobility problem I want to deal with is
getting the player into and out of the bottle, not rendering all the
in-game fast travel merchants obsolete. Third, many people consider
the "teleport anywhere without going there first" mods as sort of
cheating, and I would like this mod to be relatively balanced. I
know that's a fine line to tread, but I'd like to make her useful to
the player, without making her over-the-top. As such, I am trying to
limit her powers somewhat. I hope you're not offended. Your
suggestion was very good, just something not in keeping with the
direction I'm going. Your reasoning was certainly valid, however,
and your other suggestions were EXTREMELY
helpful!
Zaria, No worries, the Mark and Recall
version has been abandoned. I remember Multi-mark, and that (and
several of the other excellent suggestions in this thread) has shown
me the way.
oldie, I've already missed one
self-imposed release date due to unexpected issues and helpful
suggestions which led to unforeseen additions, so I won't promise
another date. However, unless I commit suicide out of frustration
with the Voice thing, I think, mind you I say think that you
can reasonably expect to see Jeannie by Christmas. (Oh,
Azura, I hope I didn't just curse myself! Oh, well, at least I
didn't say which year.)
And
I'm not going to say anything more about dancing!

My latest
character just did the temple's Pilgrimage of the Seven
Graces.
Now when my Atronach sign didn't absorb the blessing,
I found that having a 100 pt levitation for such a long time was
pretty darn nifty.
I think that a long duration levitation
spell, perhaps one or two hours of game time, not real time, would
be an appropriate wish, especially at sufficient velocity. I know
that if I could not use magic, the ability to fly from the Shrine of
Azura to Dagon Fel would be really great, PLUS it would obliviate
the need for "transport" since you could go at LEAST one way
anywhere on the island and ABOVE the cliffracers
hehe.
Actually, if you look through the shrine effects, like
Almsivi Restoration, Cure Blight, and such, as well as the
"blessings" of the saints, they're pretty nifty. Perhaps offering
thos blessings with an appropriate Jeannie name, such as
"No-Baby-In-Adjacent-Seat Flying" for levitation would add some
humour and usefulness while lessening the need to work in a
transport system.
I haven't tried the companion mods, but it
seems that having Jeannie cast the "blessing" on you and your
companion would be easier scripting than transportation or working
around cel issues.

Any progress
with the sound issue?
Post Extras: |
|
|
Some progress
has been made with the sound. Many thanks to Miles Acraeus, who
provided guidance! Part of the problem was also that even if you
correctly point the voice tab entries to the mp3 file, unless the
mp3 file is in the default race/sex directory, it will play properly
in the editor, but not in the game. So I got it to play by making
Jeannie a Breton. Now to see if I can make her a Custom race Genie
again, and make a new race directory "g" (with "f" and "m"
subdirectories) under the voices directory in sounds, and get the
voice to play properly that way. The solution I've got working now
has the Voice entry tagged for Jeannie only, so it's not like any
other Breton female will say it, but on the other hand, currectly
Jeannie will also say all the other Breton female responses, which I
don't want.
Also, I need to apologize for the delay.
Real Life (tm) has been insanely busy since this past Thursday, and
I am also working on the AI for CanadianIce's Rambo (in addition to
Jeannie), so things are going a bit slower. Most of the Wishes/Magic
are in place (and the three-wishes-per-day system functions
perfectly!) so all that is left is finishing the last tweaks to the
voice, finish that bloody Mark-and-Recall workaround (you will only
be able to enter the bottle from an exterior cell, but you can
summon Jeannie anywhere), and the quest. The quest is shaping up to
be largely a matter of following cryptic hints, getting through a
couple of trick areas, and some fighting of levelled creatures (the
only non-levelled opponent at this point is Jeannie's sister, about
which I'll say no more.
Oh,
and I forgot to add the dancing part, so I'll have to go back and
add that, or face a lynching by zahratustra on my own thread!
Kaleban, I had already looked at the Shrine
blessings, and I completely agree, some variations of several of
them have already made their way onto the "Wish list".
So no worries there!
Tommy, If you keep her in the
bottle, there's little she can screw up, true. But if you have her
out during battle, she can provide potenetially life-saving support,
but she may burn off a Wish in the process. So it's up to the player
as to how "close to the vest" he or she wants to play it. Like in
the series, in the bottle she can't cause too much chaos. On the
outside, her good intentions and eagerness to please may sometimes
lead to unwanted consequences!
oldie, and
Trosian, Thanks for the
support!

This sounds
like a great mod. My suggestions which of course you are more than
free to ignore:
Can
you integrate the history of your genie into Elder Scrolls lore? For
example, make her a minor Daedra lord or something like
that.
An opportunity for the player to free the genie perhaps
triggering a quest of some sort as she asks the player to help her
battle whoever trapped her in the bottle to begin with.
Some
daedric cultists hear rumors that their 'forgotten god' has been
redisovered and seek the player out to obtain the bottle (by force
if necessary).

Malhavoc, The back story for the Genie already
includes TES lore. I am a stickler for that sort of thing, myself.
See Hippolyta and Decius for proof.
As for the quest: just
doing the find-the-damn-bottle quest is becoming an involved and
time-consuming part of making this mod, which has already made me
regret putting the words "Almost Finished" in this thread's title,
as that idea has greatly increased the time necessary to complete
this. If I added another quest, the release would slip so far
back that a horde of forum members attired in Jeremy's Arkay armour
would be hunting me down! I really want to get this out by
Christmas, so no extra quests this time around, sorry. All will be
tied in with TES lore, however.

Would asking
you to provide a version with significantly more opaque clothing on
Jeannie (and kin) be a reasonable request?
Some of us (by
which I mean I) might want a more presentable genie, one you'd be
willing to bring home to mother, so to speak.

Nice mod idea.

One option would be to simply
reskin the "body" parts underneath to remove or soften obvious
features. This would give the impression of a gauzy fabric that
isn't *quite* as see-through as the stuff in the Thin Clothing mod,
and doesn't involve having to redo the base model.

A few
points
-PLEASE leave her in some rediculously skimpy
outfit. The joy of fantasy games are that no matter how much soft
skin is shown...she still gets to hand the bad guys their butts on a
plate. How about a companion share option?
-What about a
Better Bodies version of this?
- What about some story
there? Lots of wisdom in a thousand year old female-stuff she can
certainly impart on a rash nord like myself. I know this is probably
the opposite to what you have heard as far as companions but...MORE
TEXT OPTIONS. Make her a wealth of info(just not always usefull
info) Give her a real story. A romantic hook would be wonderful as
well.
Thanks for constructing Mod though, Ive been
trying myself for a while but, while I have all the artistic skills
needed, I lack anything more then rudimenary TESC skill.

I think I have
a solution that will satisfy both camps on the wardrobe issue. I
will include two almost identical esps. One with the diaphonous
outfits Niero originally created, and one using a set of
non-translucent ones he later added. Otherwise, the esps will be
identical, so both the most puritanical and the most prurient can
enjoy the mod.
Additionally, Jeannie will have the ability
to blink herself into several different outfits, anyway.
zahratustra, "Not for long" was in reference to
the screenshot links earlier in this thread which are now gone. It
was brought to my attention that even though the genies were fully
dressed, the outfits were not suitable for direct linking on this
forum, so I asked for them to be removed.

Alaric, Sorry, I think we were posting at the
same time.
She will still be in the skimpy outfit in one
version, and in curlers, bunny slippers and a flannel robe in the
other.
Just kidding, the other version is the same outfit, but
totally opaque. And as I say, she can blink up other attire on
demand.
As for kicking butt and Companion Share: Nope. The
whole point is to make a companion who is useful without being 1) a
pack animal or 2) cannon fodder. She can help in various ways when
things get tough, but she is not intended to compete with other
companions, she is intended to augment them, or to provide company
for players who don't want a companion mod in the usual sense. If
you REALLY want to use the Genie to haul loot, you can spend a Wish
to get into the bottle and use the storage facilities there, and
spend another Wish to go back later and retrieve the stuff at your
destination.
In re: Better Bodies, we'll see if they are
compatible with these outfits when they are released, or if Niero or
the Better Clothes team makes these clothes compatible with them. As
I have repeatedly stated, dying pond scum can produce better art
than I can, so look not to me for meshes or textures! I have
fortunately become friends with some amazing artists on these
boards, whose work can be seen in this mod, so hope springs eternal,
despite my meagre sub-refrigerator-art capabilities.
How
much wisdom do you acquire from looking at the inside of a bottle
for a millenium? I'll bet she's really good at Solitaire or the
equivalent, though!
And
on story and Companions: I wrote the (History) book on them! A lore-aware back story is
included, but romance will have to wait for version 2 (as will,
alas, not using Mark and Recall - I have got the system, but that
feature will NOT be ready for Christmas thanks to delays on other
fronts).
As of now, she will use your Mark and Recall to get you in and out
of the bottle, but you can always avoid going into the bottle if you
don't want to screw up your Mark. You will never be forced to
go into her bottle (at least until I have implemented the workaround
in the next version).
AcidBasik, There are some
pretty unique Companions out there...I know, I've researched and
dissected a ton of them.
You may be surprised.
I admit there are a few REALLY bad ones, a few REALLY good ones, and
many in the middle. Even some of those left behind by time have
elements that still make them worth downloading and taking for a
spin, though. When Jeannie is done, I have to get my History updated and posted on Emma's and Grumpy's
site before they send Morgana and Britt after me!

A bit of bad
news, and some good news.
The bad news is: this won't make
Christmas.
The delay won't be long, though!
The good news is: the folks
who are dying for a non-hack-and-slash, non-fed-ex quest are going
to get their hearts' desire. It's a real quest, involving a search
for clues, some magical hack-proof obstacles, and a puzzle or two.
The emphasis is on observation, thought, and persistence; the story
is grounded in Tamriel's ancient history in compliance with
established lore. Of course there are additions (Genies have never
been mentioned before), but it has all been logically tied in to the
established history after much painstaking research at UESP, the
Imperial Library, and through secret anonymous lurking of the more
esoteric places on these boards,
in a serious attempt to insure that even the most die-hard of the
Lore buffs will not be disappointed. However, it should still be fun
(and playable), even if you don't know House Direnni from the House
of Pancakes.
So
quality smashed my deadline. I hope you'll find it worth it. Just
wait a little longer, and enjoy your Holidays. Both Genies are still
on their way!

Oh, the
Spirits have done it all in one night! Well, all right, not quite
ALL, but since you've all been so very sweet and supportive and
since it's CHRISTMAS...
I made a taster. Just for you, as a Christmas
present.
It has no quests, no evil sister, no immortality,
and nothing is placed in the game. You will have to console
this:
player->AddItem, "-jhs_genie_bottle" 1
Then
place the bottle on the floor and activate it.
You can summon
her and send her back to the bottle, make three wishes a
day (number of wishes resets at midnight). Some of the wishes
have been stripped out (so there will be a few surprises left in the
main mod)!
And the minor magic works as well.
Oh, yes, dancing IS
included, even in the taster!
So are three new sounds.
The go-inside-the-bottle
transportation is missing, though if you want to have a
look:
coc "Genie Bottle" You WILL need to use fixme if you
try this, since you will arrive knee-deep in the floor. The finale
version will NOT have that problem.
Last point, since
this is not a "real release" I am NOT putting it up anywhere. Anyone
who wants this for Christmas (or before the full release) can PM me
their e-mail address, and I will send it to them.
Merry
Christmas!

Ok, a couple
of the people who got the Taster reported in, and it seems to be
working without any major errors.
**Minor
Spoiler**
I discovered a problem with
a function which was NOT included in the taster: the Wishes for
weather control. Weather contorl worked well -- too well. It enabled
you to screw up part of the Tribunal Main Quest and circumvent much
of the trouble with Red Mountain, so I went back and fixed this.
Your weather Wishes will not affect Red Mountain while Dagoth Ur is
alive, and they will not affect Mournhold while Almalexia is alive.
Also, the good Genie will not create ash storms, blight storms or
blizzards, on general principles.
**End
Minor Spoiler**
CanadianIce kindly whipped up two new
hairstyles for Jeannie and her evil twin for use when they are
appearing incognito. I think you will like them, I do!
Anyway,
work is continuing. Back story design is done, and in-game books
(lore-heavy, and containing useful clues for the quest) are starting
to appear.
Stay tuned...

big thing.
Anyway I've found problems with resurrecting

through the console. Unfortunately the quest was still broken and I
had to restore a saved game. Maybe it was just a one time glitch
though.

"Charm/Calm
this person for me, Jeannie. -Yes, Master!" *starts dancing in
front of an entranced NPC with only her skimpy veil

---
"I
wish to have Skooma! (heh, heh.. I'll be rich in no time!) -Here
you go, master! I'm not allowed to provide you with something that
would hurt you, but drink yourself silly with this!" *gives the PC a
1-gold valued "Bargain Tea" bottle and
giggles*
---
"Reveal to me the knowledge of
Everything! The recipe of *various effect potions*, the location of
the master trainer..." and whatnot. Even copy-pasted from a faq
or walkthrough would be fine.
---
"Change this freak's
face to something better, Jeannie. -Sure, will do!" *alters the
target NPC's face* Now that should be a challenge. Don't think
Morrowind's engine would allow it, do ya? Any way to change texture
paths/names/references in-game?
---
"This spot would
look lovely with a little vegetation, don't you think,
Jeannie? -Of course, Master!" *various plants magically grow*
(dunno if there's a scripted way to alter size in-game?), they are
just a tiny bit translucent to show their magic nature, and fade
away after a minute's time. Completely useless eye candy! Then,
depending on the PC's skill in alteration or alchemy, there would be
a few plants with salvageable reagents, just enough and little
enough to make it a safe but purely cosmetic
wish-per-day...
Anyways, maybe these have been thought of
before, but I do like the possibilities for many, many "useless"
wishes

Nevvynn, Having already missed my deadlines
(i.e., the line past which something - usually the author - is dead)
,
I am extremely wary of putting myself under another one. Basically,
I have added much more to this mod than I had originally planed
(thanks to requests and comments in this thread), so the "almost
finished" claim in my original post has become seriously
embarassing. I long ago finished the "little mod" I had planned, but
in response to requests, the Genie has gained more powers (mostly
still limited under the 3 per day Wish category). To balance this,
the quest must be tougher, but still balanced to provide challenge
for low and high levels. And it all must be lore-friendly (because
that's the kind of guy I am).
Additionally, I am taking a
break tonight to finish (hopefully) a couple of scripts for Star Boi
and CanadianIce, but work on the Genie continues apace.
Wakka, I'm very sorry, but I don't think
resurrection will be doable. To the best of my knowledge, there is
no way to script an NPC (in this case, the Genie) to interact with
another NPC (living or dead) without specifically writing the script
to reference the ID of each target NPC. And I am just not going to
do that for every NPC in the game. If I did, the release date would
be some time in 2012, and everybody else in this thread would kill
us both!
Xeromist, Right.
Hitto,
Charm/Calm: See Specific NPC ID problem I discussed in response
to resurrection above. Same thing.
Skooma: Cute, but the
wish list is long enough now without getting silly! I did get a
chuckle out of it, though!
Knowledge: She's a few millennia out of date (stuck in the
bottle), and the Master Trainers weren't even BORN when she was
around. As for potion recipes...hmm. That could be done.
Faces: See Resurrection/Charm/Calm. Get Faces of Vvardenfell
instead!
Vegetation: Could be done, but they would be normal plants.
I'd rather leave it to the Herbalism mod (which allowed for seeds,
and handled the whole thing quite well), but if more people want it,
I could add it in.

Oh, the horror! Even I am not that
evil...or disorganized.
Actually, now that my work on Star
Boi's Staff of Magius is done, and my work on Rambo is done (pending
Ice's approval of my work for her), finishing Jeannie is my top
priority. Along with ongoing work on Uvirith Awakened. And GYO. And
updating the History. And...AAAAHHH!
That's
better!
The quest for the Genie mod is progressing, including
a couple of VERY unique locations! Since my forte is scripting, the
creation of the interiors is going slowly, and the actual quest is
shaping up faster than the locales in which is takes place.
Many, many thanks to the talented artists who have
contributed beautiful work to this project. Besides CanadianIce,
dongle, and Niero, the credits have grown by a secret addition, not
to be named until release!
Back story and lore research are
done. Books and scrolls containg cryptic clues comtinue to be
added.
Jeannie's powers are done.
Sounds are still
rather dodgy at best. Just read in the Orc voices thread about the
merits of LAME encoding, and am looking into that.
Of course,
if a certain person on this forum who knows Barbara Eden's niece
could put in a word to get some custom dialogue done (dream on,
Vorwoda!), I would be on cloud 9!

This sounds
great! Just what every Telvanni Wizard could want (and probably any
other faction as well)
Looking
forward to your release.

The quest is
building nicely. The good Genie is finished. The evil Genie is
continuing to get more and more fun and capriciously wicked!
I
am waiting for a texture from my Secret Contributor, but that is not
stopping the creation of the quest, so I am still progressing on
it.
Cryptic poem clues, lore books, and so on (I don't want
to give too much away here) have been added, and the quest is
continuing to grow, always with an eye toward balance, challenge,
and fun.

Vorwoda,
having recently "bumped" into you in a thread where you mentioned
your new project, it prompted me to resuscitate your original thread
on "Genie" since it's been a good month or more since your last
update. How are things going, here? Anything new to report on
character, quests, completion date? No doubt you would have shouted
for help if you needed it.
You have a lot of "fans" out
there "suspended" on tenterhooks. Put them out of some of their
misery!

My
"resuscitation" post wasn't an attempt to force Vorwoda's hand in
committing to a release date (I hope he's not getting ready to use
that wicked wand on me )
. We all know how "impossible" such dates are to specify, and we
know how busy he is assisting on other projects.
It was more of a request for some titbit (updated screenie
of Jeannie, for example) to keep the appetite of the fans whetted!

Well there's

I should get off my

this, but Vorwoda obviously has a more updated version to take
screens of.
I'd like to see a picture of Evil Jeanie personally.

Wow, M, thanks
for the pic. I'd missed out on the Jeanie/Jeannie(?) discussion at
the beginning of the year, being "elswhere at the time". That "head"
is an absolutely amazing likeness - was it done by Ice, and is that
what V is using? Or is it just a "photomontage leg-pull"?
I
do wish V would put us all out of suspense - but, "knowing" him,
probably in 2 days he'll announce the mod's release!

Yes Ice made
it, it's real and it's what Vorwoda will be using, though he is
using a different hairstyle, a retextured Bethesda hair which I
think Ice also did. I'm actually curious to see it because quite
frankly, I don't think much of Bethesda hair, but maybe with a nice
texture I can be swayed. Maybe.

AAAAAGH! Keep saying things like
that, oldie, and I will have to use that wand!
Okay, to all and sundry: thanks for all your support and
encouragement!
Motoki, don't worry about the hair! I AM
using the non-Beth hair Ice sent me (and which you see in the pic
you posted), and the "Evil Genie" hair she sent as well, but I am
also using the retextured Beth hair (my favourite of the original
hairs) for certain Genie-in-disguise sequences.
The quest is becoming an involved one that will take you on
a hunt through various locales on Vvardenfell and Solstheim
(sometimes against your will...). There are a number of different
NPC's involved, and some of them required me to consult with Emma on
authentic Nordic names.
I am discovering how compleatly
backwards I am from most other modders: I can script up a storm, but
can't make a decent interior to save my butt. And I need two fairly
sadistic interiors for a couple of quest-critical locales. I may
have help on that front, if a certain "secret contributor" can get
TESCS time away from his other projects for a bit. Two quickie item
retextures have me in the same position.
The bit I
contributed to ModTown is sort of a tie in to the Genie quest as
well, though it is an entirely separate project.
To those
who have the Taster, you'll be relieved to know that after days of
beating my head against TESCS, I finally got the dashed Bottle
Interior to work as desired, so fixme is no longer required when you
go inside. And now smoke only comes out of the bottle when Jeannie
is appearing out of it, not constantly as before.
I have
been inolved in helping others in a couple of other projects, as
well (another reason for delays). But she is progressing, and I
think the Nord NPC's I made for this mod will meet your approval.
And I hope for your sakes, that you meet their
approval...
And yes, the Head was done by CanadianIce as a
personal favour. I sent her the pic on the left in Motoki's link,
and she sent me the head on the right within 24 hours! CI is
gracious, fast, talented, and generally amazing!
Anyway,
that's the report for now. Everything is as lore-friendly as I can
possibly make it, and I have spent a vast amount of time on
research for this mod.
Oh, Motoki, I'll have to do a
censored version of Evil Genie for screenies..and if you take
screenshots to link to here, you'll have to Bowdlerize them as well.
I was politely informed that Niero's Genie Outfit does not qualify
on this board for direct linking, which is why I had my old
screenies removed.

DoomedMarauder, I have already had to write 100
times on the black board, "I will not give out release dates any
more."
Having missed one or two, I have sworn an oath not to let people
down again by missing more of them. I can find new ways of letting
them down! For example, by not answering fully justified questions.
See what you learn from CNN? So I refuse to answer that question on
the grounds that doing so (and failing to make good) will surely
result in the lynch mobs reconvening outside Tel Uvirith, and I have
so many dead bodies out there already that I can barely find the
door. Oh, sure, it's easy to say "I will click on the Dispose
of Corpse button", but once you start putting these things off... I
guess I'll have to go buy some hungry Bosmer slaves. Again.

Vorwoda, many,
many thanks indeed for taking the time to give us such a detailed
response, and for explaining the head/face situation. It appears
that it's turning into a "significant quest" and no doubt this
(amongst everything else you're doing) is eating up the time. - No
one should be asking for release dates, merely "updates"!
If
you're battling with interiors (and I'm no good at them either -
requires a special talent) I can thoroughly recommend Zahratustra
who kindly offered me his assistance (he finished my requirement in
an amazingly short space of time) and does have a bit of free time
at the moment. Give him a PM - I'm sure he will not regard me as too
forthcoming in suggesting him.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

oldie, Sorry I missed your post until now!
Your suggestion about Z could have saved me a significant chunk of
time (and still can). I've almost completed a nasty little
labyrinth, but I still need a certain interior complex, and I'll
drop zahratustra a line and see if he has a bit of time to
spare.
I am really learning to hate placing doors... I'm
about 3/4 of the way through placing the 264 of them I need for this
labyrinth. Muahahahaha!

Vorwoda,
realizing you are trying to complete this, not brainstorm it for
concept at this point, perhaps suggestions that do not fit might be
considered for later 'versions':
- I suggest the script be
written like weapon changes and enchantments so that Jenie CANNOT be
summoned during combat. That gets around a lot of the balance
issues.
- I think a 'pocket domain' IS an outstanding idea.
Very simple for a beginning character - a hole to crawl into with a
bed and a crate. Several [?] levels of improvements based on the
PC's level - becoming Grandmaster of house, Nevarerine for example.
- genie should be able to do things my character cannot
easily do or where is the "Magic"? I can always buy a lockpick. Just
that she can only do them infrequently as suggested.
- I
would have one free ride to the pocket domain each day for the
player and any/all companions. And the pocket domain should have a
Mage Guild guide type return to one or more guild halls in
Vvardenfell. A significant benefit but not a Level 3 zap anywhere in
the Empire goodie!
Regards, looking forward to the mod . .

Ronin49,
You make some very good points,
and some that perhaps I can clear up.
Quote:

There are no balance issues here.
Jeannie will NOT fight for you. Period. It doesn't matter if you
summon her while busy getting your butt kicked by Twevle Angry
Dremora Lords, she will not join the fray. She may burn off one of
your wishes without your consent by trying to heal you (or something
similar), so it's generally to the PC's advantage not to have
her around during combat, if he or she wants to have control over
what is going on. This is the "well-meaning blunder effect" of which
Major Nelson was so often a victim!
No need to worry on this score. And even if something attacked her
directly, although she is immortal in the long run, in the short
term her material form can be destroyed, forcing her back into her
bottle. So coupled with her reluctance to fight, even the
immortality is not unbalancing.
Quote:

I have a couple of ideas on this,
but status of the PC is not a factor. Jeannie is not a member of any
faction and doesn't care if you are a 100th level Nerevarine
Arch-Everything or Joe Newbie fresh off the boat. She serves her
Master (or Mistress) to the best of her abilities. The Bottle's
furnishings consist of basic storage and cushions (all scaled up to
enhance the effect of you and Jeannie being tiny while inside the
bottle). I have toyed with the idea of having other furnishings for
the Bottle available via Wishes, but have not implemented any yet. A
bed is one such thought; a table with food, another. It costs you a
Wish to enter the Bottle (it's free to get back out - a round trip
is assumed in the Wish). It won't send you to a Mages Guild, but
will put you back wherever you dropped the Bottle (you MUST set the
Bottle down to get this Wish - you can't go inside while you're
carrying the Bottle you're inside of...) This system IS still
subject to change, as there are still a couple of bugs here. And
taking Companions along into the Bottle is just not possible. Since
the entrance cannot be a door, support for Companions would have to
be coded on an individual basis ID by ID for any number of Companion
mods. And if the Player happened not to have one or more of those
mods, very unpleasant errors would occur. I could do 815,293
versions of this mod, covering all possible combinations of
currently existing companions, and the day after I release the mod,
somebody may release a new companion and I'd get e-mails saying
"Hey, why isn't So-and-So's Companion following me into the Bottle?
Your mod sucks!" So sorry, but Companions (except Jeannie herself)
stay out of the Bottle. This one is simply not feasible. It would be
nice if it was, but I have yet to find a stable solution, and I have
examined half a dozen previous "cart your home around" type mods as
part of my exhaustive research.
Quote:
- genie should be able to do things my character cannot easily
do or where is the "Magic"? I can always buy a lockpick. Just that
she can only do them infrequently as suggested.
Ah, but you can't buy a lockpick
when you're in the hold of a shipwreck at the bottom of the sea, or
deep in a crypt or someplace similar. If you are caught without a
pick, and find yourself a long way from town, Jeannie can provide
you with a pick - but it will cost a wish. The catch with your
statement that she should be able to do things your character can't
easily do, is that each person's character is different. What your
character does well, someone else's may not, and Jeannie should have
at least SOMETHING to offer any potential Master or Mistress. A
point was raised earlier in this thread that basic magic which would
help non-magic characters (levitation, water breathing, etc.) of
limited duration would be appreciated by non-spellcaster types.
Caught without the right potion? Jeannie can help, provided you
still have a Wish left for the day. That got me thinking more about
what DIFFERENT types of characters would ask for. So while some of
the potential Wishes may not be of interest to you while playing a
Mage, those same Wishes might be your favourites when playing a
Thief. And so on. Unless she blows your Wishes "helping" you when
you're in combat, the choice of what to spend your Wishes on is
yours. But you only get three a day, so you'll have to choose
wisely, and plan ahead when
possible.
DoomedMarauder,
Quote:
I'm worried about that 249 doors business. He may be looking

this.
Hehe! No, I'm not plotting
revenge, I'm gratified at the interest displayed by everybody who
has posted. The Labyrinth is just part of my way of making sure the
quest to get the Genie is:
1) Doable by anyone, from Newbie
to Nerevarine, 2) Challenging for anyone, from Newbie to
Nerevarine, 3) Commensurate with the Reward (Jeannie), 4) Lore
friendly.
I WILL admit that the recent appearance of the
Chalk mod and the Thread mod have led me to be more evil with the
Labyrinth than I had originally intended. I can assure you that
neither of those toys will help you in the least! Muahahaha! But

With regard to
companions going into the bottle, since it is possible to do fast
travel from one indoor cell to another (ala Mournhold), could you
have Jeannie say she wants to make sure the bottle is set down
somewhere safe indoors first before she will let you in (would make
sense, we wouldn't want a guar coming along and stepping on it now
would we?) and then take the PC and any companions inside via fast
travel?

Vorwoda -
thanks for the generous reply. Not meant to be a distraction. I had
read the thread, thought about the various points of view for awhile
and thought that pre-release might be a better time to throw in two
cents than after
Doomed
Marauder - on the other hand, besides four fingers and a thumb, that
graveyard cackling sound I hear in the background suggests he may
WELL need distracting from this awful impossible maze project.

Motoki Actually, Fast Travel had been my first
thought. But I couldn't find a way to get Jeannie to refrain from
charging the Player in gold for the service (which is extremely
immersion-breaking IMHO). There doesn't seem to be a way to access
Fast Travel services through dialogue, you have to use the Service
Menu. I even tried giving her a Mercantile of 0.
I
liked the idea of her asking you to put the Bottle down someplace
safe. But since part of the storyline to the quest depends on the
fact that the Bottles are indestructible, it's kind of moot. If the
Bottles could be destroyed, the Evil Genie (who is on the loose)
would have destroyed hers long ago. I can't say more without giving
plot points away, but let's just say that no Guar can harm the
Bottle in any way that a quick polish couldn't cure!
DoomedMarauder, Sharp
eyes and sharp wits are your best weapons throughout my quest. Keep
those and you won't miss the Thread or Chalk.
Ronin49, Not
a distraction at all, and I appreciate the input. And i agree that
pre-release is the best time to add things. Your thoughts on
furnishings for the Bottle have made me give another look to the
interior of it, and there may be some changes made as a result. So
your two cents may have bought some enhancements.
Thanks!

On the
companions, I haven't tried this, but I was thinking once that you
could probably get companions to come in the bottle through dialog.
Basically the player is standing near the bottle, a global would be
set to add the topic "come inside". Then you could test for either
Companion Share or Follow AI (neither of which are perfect I admit)
to see if the person the PC is talking to is a follower.

might know where you could find an excellent solution to the
enter/leave the Bottle problem. Talk to Kaos_nyrb. In his most
recent mod (Grow Telvanni Towers v.2), you can "grow" towers that
contain have scripted doors that go to interior cells. The solution
involved a different form of teleportation as you can use it
ANYWHERE. As far as I know, the mod problem solves two major
problems:
One: The problem that certain Exterior cells don't
work. I say this meaning that instead of returning you to the "other
end of the linked doors," it'll bring you to somewhere completely
different (I.E. Bal Isra instead of Balmora). This new system is far
more stable than the previously used methods.
Two: It dosen't
rely on the Mark/Recall spells. This is again, essential for the
Fishing Academy and Dwemer Airship [etc.] mods (nothing is more
aggrivating than having to search the entire ocean for your friggin'
galleon because you used the Mark Spell).
So, if you are
still out there, and still working on this mod, then talk to
Kaos_nyrb about how he did it.

happened to Vorwoda?
I haven't seen any posts from him in a
good while now. and no updates on the Genie.

I fear that
Vorwoda fell victim to the dread Real Life. Hopefully an early frost
will drive him indoors and back to modding ...

I've returned
to these forums after being absent for a few months to find out the
status of some of the mods I was waiting for only to find that
Vorwoda's Genie mod is still not available!
This is not good news but maybe, just maybe, Vorwoda will post some
sort of update soon?
